New Studio Build [Page 2]

October 23, 2009

The rain stopped, we dried out a bit and then the concrete guys were here.  Because the studio will be set back behind the house, and it's not possible to get a standard concrete truck or boom back there, we had to use a line pump.

Early this morning they started laying out the hose - actually about 300 feet of hose in call from the street back to the studio.  You can see it here going down my driveway and into the back yard.

We ended up needing a little more concrete than first estimated - I think about 26 yards in all.  There is a slope in the yard that is not really that noticeable, but the back edge of the studio is a lot higher than the front corner (it's level but the yard slopes) - so we needed more dirt and then more concrete in the center beams.

After the concrete was all poured, the crew smoothed the concrete and then one guy spent many hours with "the jitterbug" which almost looks like he's waxing the floor.  Made the slab nice and smooth though.

You can also see where the outdoor patio will be a few inches lower than the studio - this will help keep any rain outside where it belongs.

Before they left, they also stripped away some of the supports.  If the weather holds up, they will return Monday to remove the forms and then we'll start the framing.  If you look really close you may see some small bolts sticking out from the slab.  These are actually "L" shaped rods that were inserted in the wet concrete.   They will be used to secure the bottom 2x6 of the frame to the floor.

It's raining again but the lumber got delivered today.  It's supposed to clear up tomorrow and if it does they should strip off the formers and possibly even start framing.  should get the trusses tomorrow as well.

It's
finally a beautiful day.  Formers are now gone and the framing started - although a slight delay here as most of the 2x6's that were delivered were treated (Yellawood) but they were not supposed to be.  That was rectified fairly quickly though since the lumber had been delivered by Home Depot and since there is one on nearly every corner now...

But it's finally starting to take shape and I could get a better feel for how big it might be - the ceiling is going to be really high!

no more formers!

Framing, Day 1

October 30, 2009

The studio is really moving along now.  I missed getting a picture yesterday between the lingering rain and then band rehearsal.  You can see inside the floor is still a bit wet.  This weekend is supposed to be really nice so it should dry out.   As the walls are enclosed and the roof installed, I can really get a good sense of the size and I think it's going to be great.

The roofers are supposed to be here tomorrow to install the felt and shingles.
